Visiting Salisbury Cathedral
Magna Carta, the tallest spire in Britain and how to get there from a cruise, an airport or London.
Salisbury Cathedral is the heart of the city and one of the finest medieval buildings in England. Whether you are visiting for a day, arriving on a cruise or coming to a service or concert, here is what to see and how to get there without worrying about driving or parking.
Why visit Salisbury Cathedral
- The tallest spire in Britain, at 123 metres (404 feet), visible for miles across the Wiltshire countryside.
- Magna Carta: the cathedral’s Chapter House displays one of the four surviving original copies of the 1215 charter.
- The Cathedral Close, the largest in Britain, with historic houses and lawns that are a pleasure to walk around.
- A medieval clock dating from around 1386, often described as the oldest working mechanical clock in the world.
Opening times, guided tower tours and ticket prices are set by the cathedral and change through the year, so please check the cathedral’s own website before you travel.
How long to allow
Allow at least an hour inside the cathedral and the Chapter House, and another half hour to walk around the Close. With lunch in the city, two hours is comfortable. If you are coming from a Southampton cruise, the whole trip takes about half a day; combined with Stonehenge it fits easily into a six-hour private tour.
Services, concerts and seasonal events
Throughout the year, and especially around Advent and Christmas, the cathedral hosts services, carol concerts and special events that draw visitors from across Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset. Evening events often finish after the last convenient bus or train, which is where a pre-booked return journey helps: your driver collects you at the agreed time and takes you home.
